Lionized during the 1860s and 1870s for his sensitive paintings of country life, his subjects were commonly haymakers and cornhuskers, cranberry pickers and maple sugar makers. Book showcases the former James J. Hill collection of Seth Eastman watercolors. In addition there are scenes based on Eastman's experiences in other parts of the country--landscapes, paintings of Indian artifacts, etc. Published together for the first time since the 1850s, these painting comprise the largest extant collection of Eastman watercolors.
