Description
Annotation,The Interdependence Reader is a collection of essays, speeches, historical documents and discussion questions on interdependence, the guiding principle for civic life in the 21st century. From a number of perspectives, it explores the civic implications of interdependence, and the urgent need for citizens to expand their sense of responsibility beyond community and nation to all of the world's people, if we are to choose a future that holds the promise of "liberty and justice for all." Readings focus on the realities of interdependence as they affect all aspects of life-personal, social, political, cultural and economic. The Reader contains works by Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Vaclav Havel, Kofi Annan, Benjamin Barber and many other distinguished authors and public leaders. A special section is included on Interdependence day, with practical suggestions on how schools, colleges, and civic, religious and cultural organizations throughout the world can celebrate Interdependence day on September 12.
